Malformations of the nipple or areola can mar the appearance of the woman affected and in some cases also cause physical problems. Retracted or inverted nipples, nipples that are too large or a mammary areola of above-average size often evoke considerable psychological stress in women \u2013 and occasionally also in men. This can be mitigated or alleviated successfully by surgical treatment. Sometimes the nipple is absent after having had to be removed in the context of a cancer operation.
