Breast augmentation with implants
Today, breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed operations in aesthetic surgery. The reasons for a breast augmentation can vary greatly from patient to patient. Breast augmentation with implants (plastic augmentation surgery) may be an option for women whose breasts have not developed, or hardly developed, or the size of which has diminished unfavourably as a result of
major weight loss or pregnancy and breast feeding.
In breast augmentation with implants, silicone gel implants are usually inserted through an incision in the submammary crease. Breast implants are either round or anatomically teardrop shaped and are placed under the gland or under the pectoral muscle to create a natural breast shape. However, it not only depends on the patient’s wishes, but also on what anatomical requirements she brings with her, which breast implant can be chosen. Body-compatible silicone with a textured surface or implants coated with polyurethane foam are usually used here.
Prior to breast surgery, the patient is involved in breast implant selection during the examination and consultation, and breast implants are demonstrated to her. During breast augmentation with implants, it is possible to simulate a definitive result using so-called trial implants before the breast implant is finally inserted. Nowadays, silicone implants are very well developed in terms of quality – many manufacturers give a lifetime guarantee on them. In the human body, however, breast implants usually do not last for life, so that sooner or later the breast implants may have to be replaced.
Treatment with fat from the patient’s own body is often perceived as more natural. This is more suitable for women who would find a silicone gel implant intrusive. Having said that, the advantage of a breast implant is that considerably larger breast sizes can be achieved in a single operation.
We also offer breast augmentations in the context of gender reassignment operations in cases of man-to-woman transsexualism. Here, it is a question of paying heed to the particular anatomical characteristics of the patient when planning the operation.
For our own patients, and also for patients who have been operated on elsewhere, we offer check-ups for their breast implants on an annual and an as-required basis.
